What is Developmental Editing?

Specialized editors are often used at different stages in the process of producing documents and manuscripts for authors. For example, the important stage of copyediting represents an essential, after-the-fact, quality control activity. In contrast, a developmental editor gets involved early in the creative process and works with the author to fully develop a final product. The goal of a developmental editor is to ensure that the best and most effective product is produced for the author’s intended audience. The range of activities undertaken by developmental editors is summarized on the web site of the Bay Area Editors' Forum.

I can use my background in the engineering sciences and my experience in communicating technical concepts to help you reach and influence the audience that is most important for your concept and/or product. Whether you are working on: 1) a Power Point presentation for a proposal or conference, 2) a final project report, or 3) a new technical proposal or grant request for funding from private or government sources, I can help with document organization and with streamlining communication without loss of technical content or sacrificing meaning.
